DPSIS Student Council – Character, Courage and Compassion
Grooming Tomorrow’s Leaders Today
At DPSIS, student leadership lies at the heart of building a strong, vibrant, close-knit community built on care, collaboration, and connection. Developing student leadership skills has been a key focus of the institution and in 2014 a Student Council was instituted in addition to the traditional School and House captaincies offered to students. Our Council has a rich legacy of student-led initiatives promoting a caring community and creating positive relationships strengthening the bonds of a ‘Happy School’!
HOW IS THE STUDENT COUNCIL ORGANISED
The Senior School Student Council is the student leader of DPS International School. Nominated by their peers and with the support of their teachers, prospective Senior Council members are required to give election speeches and canvas votes in ways that rival even Presidential Elections. Voting is highly organized, and the outgoing Senior Council is charged with carefully counting the votes. The newly elected team then retreats to decide on the specific roles for each Council member and to set the direction for the year ahead. As true Student Leaders, their vision and their rallying of students create a special atmosphere.
STUDENT SOCIETIES LED BY STUDENT COUNCIL
The DPSIS Student Council comprises six Student Societies which have spearheaded student-led efforts to promote arts activities, charitable drives, literary and awareness campaigns, entrepreneurial projects and sporting events. Members of staff serve as their mentors to facilitate interaction between the school administration and the student body while also enabling them to effectively fulfil their roles and duties.
These six student Societies are:
Performing Arts;
Digital Media;
Digital Tech;
Literary Society;
Finance & Entrepreneurship;
Sports Council
CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM & PEER WELLBEING
The challenges posed by the pandemic have reinforced our faith in the role of the Student Council serving as a character development programme, demonstrating values such as respect, responsibility, resilience, integrity, care and harmony.
The Student Council plays an invaluable role in supporting peer wellbeing. Besides modelling positive behaviour, our student leaders play an active role in offering support and reducing barriers to mental health by organising workshops, publishing podcasts, organising campaigns and raising awareness.
Our Student Council offers diverse platforms to prepare ‘future ready’ students for a world that needs more thinkers, innovators, creators, ethical leaders and entrepreneurs. Our Council organises fundraisers and charitable drives, enabling students to step into the world beyond the classroom empowered not only with skills but also a strong sense of social responsibility.
STUDENT COUNCIL NEWSLETTERS
The Student Council lends voice to the entire student body by publishing its own newsletter featuring campus news, upcoming events, student features and polls, opinions on current affairs, creative writing and artwork. The Council’s ‘Voices of Gen C’ newsletter capturing the COVID Generation’s response to the pandemic showed us the resilience and optimism of the generation best suited for the rapid transition to digital life and the paradigm shifts brought about by the pandemic.
