7-DAY LEAVE OF ABSENCE (LOA) FOR DPS STUDENTS RETURNING FROM H1N1 AFFECTED COUNTRIES
  • DPS Parents, Staff & Visitors who have been to the ^affected countries during the vacation are advised to quarantine themselves for 7 days before attending school.
  • Check the chart below to know when you can attend the school after your return from the ^affected countries.
  • Check your temperature twice a day and maintain record even when you are at home during LOA.
  • Keep checking the MoM websites for the ^affected countries list.

WHAT IS INFLUENZA  A(H1N1) VIRUS

  • INFLUENZA  A(H1N1) Virus

    It is a potentially dangerous new strain of flu. H1N1 virus first appeared from MEXICO. Unlike the normal flu strains, from which many people have some immunity, this virus is totally new so people have no protection against it. Flu viruses are very unpredictable, very deceptive and when they mixes with other viruses it is fatal and hard to treat. H1N1 virus is infecting healthy young adults / children.

    SPREAD

    Direct contact by transmission of germs and infections with infected surfaces, tissues, handrails of escalators & stairs, lift buttons, taps in washrooms, door knobs, toys, utensils, food and drinks. 
    Respiratory inhalation of air droplets such as coughing and sneezing.

  • It is more CONTAGIOUS than seasonal flu, INFECTIOUS within 24 hrs and SPREADS BEFORE ANY SYMPTOMS SHOW.  Victims can  recover fully with prompt treatment within 48 hours of symptoms presenting. It is expected to see continued community-level outbreaks and regional spread.

PRECAUTIONARY MEASURES
  • Maintain high standards of good personal hygiene and habits.
  • Responsible social behavior and etiquette.
  • Cough and sneeze into tissues and discard immediately.
  • Regular proper hand-washing with soap and water.
  • Avoid shaking hands / Crowded areas. / Assemblies/ Hospitals.
  • Wear surgical masks covering nose and mouth when ill.
  • Advised to exercise caution over travel to affected areas.
  • Monitor temperature screening twice a day especially the school-going child.
  • If visited the affected countries within 7 days and fallen sick with flu symptoms, call 993 for ambulance.
  •        Situation is still not in control.  Young adults, infants and elderly are still getting infected.  This  illness is milder than originally feared  but more severe in people with underlying medical  conditions eg. asthma and heart diseases.
  • ^55,867 people in  ^108 countries.  ^238 deaths globally.

CONTACT TRACING:  DPS INTERNATIONAL
  • Parents / Guardians of students advised to check ward’s temperature every morning and declare readings in Almanac.
  • Questionnaire and temperature check at Administration office/Parents lounge  for visitors.
  • Visitors restrictions and no parents to mingle with our students at lunch breaks and dismissal.
  • Bus drivers and attendants continual observations on general health and hygiene.
  • If Parents/Students/Staff/Visitors visited any of the affected countries and fallen sick within 7 days, they should Call 993 for Ambulance and should not take  public transport.
  • In the other case where Parents/Students/Staff/Visitors FALL SICK with the symptoms and HAVE NOT visited the affected countries within 7 days, they should wear MASKS and see a doctor.

INDICATORS
  • WORLDWIDE – WHO   There are 8 phases of Pandemic alert.
  •  Presently set at 5.  Widespread Human Infection 5 & 6
  • SINGAPORE – MOH has a 5 alert colour system
  • Green, Yellow, Orange, Red and Black.  Currently YELLOW.
  • 11/5/09 - (Singapore) alert reduces to YELLOW.  Few human transmission.
  • 27/5/09 - (Singapore) confirmed first case of H1N1 A virus
  • 30/6/09 - (Singapore) Total 629 cases
  • Vaccination against seasonal flu only 70-80% protection. Do not work in the elderly ill.
  • Flu test kits.
  • Hospital Accident / Emergency depts.  -  Temp. ^T38 - Isolation, Blood tests, Nasal/ throat swabs, Chest X-Ray, Medications (Antibiotics, anti-viral drugs i.e. Tamiflu/Relenza.)
  • Masks  -  N95
